Join Stabat Mater Foundation for the first ever East Texas Spanish Missions Walk. The public is invited to Stafford's Meadow outside Montalba for a guided tour of the newly created East Texas Spanish Mission Trail, a short walk throught the woods that highlights the history of each mission.Along the way, visitors can admire the unique steel crosses designed to commemorate the missions. You will wan to pause before each of seven original markers designed by Palestine metal artist Terry Vogeler, who will tell how he conceptualized and realized this project.(In the late 17th century, Franciscan mssionaries left Querdtaro, Mexico, trekked up the Camino Real, and began setting up missions for the Caddoan (or Tejas) Indians in East Texas. The franciscan men in brown were the first to carry the Cross of Christ into deep East Texas. They founded a total of seven missions. For various reasons, none of them lasted here and three were transferred to San Antonio.)
